Consumers’ Protection: Whose Role?
The Need for Consumers’ Protection
Taking into account the interests and needs of consumers recognizing that consumers often face imbalances in economic terms, educational levels and bargaining power; and bearing in mind that consumers should have the right of access to non-hazardous products and fair services, as well as the right to promote just, equitable and sustainable economic and social development; facilitate production and distribution patterns responsive to the needs and desires of consumers; encourage high levels of ethical conduct for those engaged in the production and distribution of goods and services to consumers, the government should encourage the adoption of appropriate measures including legal systems, safety regulations and standards and the maintenance of safety records to ensure that products are safe for consumption. read more ...
Governing Development in Africa

By Jean Ping and Abdoulie Janneh

If there was a lesson for Africa from the last global financial and economic crisis, it may be that we should tarry a bit before writing off the state as a catalyst for development. The clear lesson from Europe and America is that the private sector, which many had looked upon as the solution to sustainable growth and development, faced severe problems and had to be rescued by state structures. Accordingly, in the US, the un-imaginable happened: Government took over banks and ran automobile companies. That was not all. Across Europe, billions of dollars were given as grants and/or loans to the private sector to help corporations keep afloat and weather the storm. What went wrong? Several explanations have been proffered but at the height of the crisis, there was broad agreement that it was in the interest of countries to arrest sliding production, curtail unemployment and save homes and families if governments lent a helping hand to the private sector in correcting market failures......Read More..............

Chipolopolo's historic triumph Dear editor, I hope you will understand the enthusiasm behind sending this letter thousands of miles away from the tip of the Horn of Africa. The reason is the Chipolopolo's, our daring and brave eleven men who turned the bookies upside down to emphatically win Zambia's first ever African Cup of Nations. Just like millions of other soccer fans across the world, we in Somalia, also witnessed as the Chipolopolo's brought down the much-fancied mighty Elephants in an electrifying match full of tensions and a mesmerizing game of football that had more of a psychological duel, rather than, the normal football physical contest . There was in deed a lesson to be learnt in the battle of wits, character and passion witnessed late last night in Libreville, Gabon. That lesson is that determination pays, and if you believe in something you will succeed no matter how big the challenge ahead. Credit to the Chipolopolo players, who were never given a chance from day one of the tour

Internship Request Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, currently I am a student in twelfth grade at the Mahindra United World College of India, doing the International Baccalaureate Diploma. After finishing my Diploma I would like to do some work with media. Over the last couple of years I have been involved in culturally diverse types of journalism and media, especially school newspaper, German local newspaper and an Indian investigative weekly. Especially the last one, Tehelka, with its "rebellious" investigative style of journalism has impressed and influenced me. Despite my lack of a formal education in journalism, I have seen different styles of press, especially in print. During my next year I would like to explore possibilities in other countries interning. Especially Kenia seemed appropriate due to culture and interesting similarities with India. Do you offer internships in your office? I would be very interested in achieving experience and bringing in my own one into daily press. Best Regards

Kindly Publish Me Dear Editor, It has been my desire to be among the list of contributors to your daily online News/articles. Kindly look into this article and publish. Thank you. Nigeria: To Be Or Not To Be? It is no longer news that our dear country, Nigeria is being bedeviled by crises of several dimensions and magnitudes. Various forces of disintegration, ranging from militancy to ethno-religious disturbances have been pulling at and tearing down the already precarious fabrics of our statehood. Corruption in high places, crass ineptitude of government at all levels, weak and mediocre leadership or absence of quality leadership, profligate and reckless mismanagement of the scarce resources by government and the attendant and consequent hardship on the vast majority of our people are some of these forces. While these unabatedly go on, the government of the day seems in the eyes of many to be in lack of clues to the solutions of these problems! As a result of these collective failures and r

Re: Flawed African Studies into Male Circumcision and HIV Re: Boyle GJ, Hill G. Sub-Saharan African randomised clinical trials into male circumcision and HIV transmission: Methodological, ethical and legal concerns. J Law Med 2011;19:316-34. The Journal of Law and Medicine, has published a new critique of those three randomized clinical trials from Africa that claimed that male circumcision reduces female-to-male sexual transmission of HIV by 60 percent. This critique finds numerous flaws in the execution of these studies and finds that the actual reduction in HIV transmission is about 1.3 percent, not the claimed 60 percent. The 1.3 percent is not considered to be clinically significant. This is balanced by a 61 percent relative increase in male to female HIV transmission when the male partner is circumcised. Given this, the three RCTs should not be used in the formulation of public health policy.
