If there was a lesson for Africa from the last global financial and economic crisis, it may be that we should tarry a bit before writing off the state as a catalyst for development. The clear lesson from Europe and America is that the private sector, which many had looked upon as the solution to sustainable growth and development, faced severe problems and had to be rescued by state structures. Accordingly, in the US, the un-imaginable happened: Government took over banks and ran automobile companies. That was not all. Across Europe, billions of dollars were given as grants and/or loans to the private sector to help corporations keep afloat and weather the storm. What went wrong? Several explanations have been proffered but at the height of the crisis, there was broad agreement that it was in the interest of countries to arrest sliding production, curtail unemployment and save homes and families if governments lent a helping hand to the private sector in correcting market failures......Read More..............

How 2 Steal 2 Million named Africa's Best Film FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE South African Charlie Vundla scooped Best Director and his debut, film noir thriller How 2 Steal 2 Million, was named Best Film at the eight Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), held last night, 22 April 2012, at The Expo Centre, Eko Hotel & Suite in Lagos, Nigeria. South African actress Terry Pheto was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, which also won Best Achievement in Editing (Garreth Fradgely). With four awards, How 2 Steal 2 Million was the most awarded film on the night. Nigeria’s Benin-set historical epic Adesuwa was a close second with three awards, for Costume Design, Visual Effects, and Best Nigerian Film. South Africa’s crime drama State of Violence won Best Film in an African Language and Best Achievement in Sound. Print story Hello! My name is Sara Bergenbrant Viklund! I live in Sweden and I am 29 years old. What would it take for you to print my story in your newspaper? I was born in Debre zeit 1982 .Since I am an orphan my hopes are to print the story of me so that maybe somebody would recognize me or know something about me. I dont know my mother or fathers name. The only information I was given is that my mother supposibly died in 1985 in starvation and my father died in a war.
