Governing Development in Africa

By Jean Ping and Abdoulie Janneh

If there was a lesson for Africa from the last global financial and economic crisis, it may be that we should tarry a bit before writing off the state as a catalyst for development. The clear lesson from Europe and America is that the private sector, which many had looked upon as the solution to sustainable growth and development, faced severe problems and had to be rescued by state structures. Accordingly, in the US, the un-imaginable happened: Government took over banks and ran automobile companies. That was not all. Across Europe, billions of dollars were given as grants and/or loans to the private sector to help corporations keep afloat and weather the storm. What went wrong? Several explanations have been proffered but at the height of the crisis, there was broad agreement that it was in the interest of countries to arrest sliding production, curtail unemployment and save homes and families if governments lent a helping hand to the private sector in correcting market failures......Read More..............

IN THE NORTH THERE IS NORTH IN THE NORTH THERE IS NORTH Please allow me a space in our beloved news paper to call on us that call ourselves the Northerners. Our leaders say so when there is a pipe for milking, after getting their share, then tribalism, sectionalism and religious bias will come in. Our leaders call for unity to fight for their right, but in reality fighting for self interest. There are so many problems facing the citizens in the North but none of them have ever thought of solving this problem. In addition within themselves if you are not from Kano, Katsina & Sokoto you are not a Northerner yet. The time Chief Sunday Awoniyi was appointed the chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, prominent personnel from Kano was against his appointment, being a Yoruba man. But he fails to remember he is from the North, because he is not from the 3 state mentioned earlier. In the North where some state governors denied the presence of Christian’s indigenous citizen in their state, which is a capital lie
