Kistet film releases

By Alemayehu Seife Selassie

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – A new film starring Fekadu Teklemariam, Direbwork Seifu, Solomon Bogale, Seife Araya and Roman Befkadu, was released on Tuesday of this week at the National Theatre. A film by Yared Production, Kistet is written by the co-writer of 11th Hour Eneyew Dechasa, and directed by Alemtsehai Bekele.
In Kistet over 400 cast and crew have participated but the major characters only amount to a dozen.

It has taken over two years for the makers to come up with the film. And the producer states that looking for the director, scriptwriter and cast has taken the longer portion of that time. “We wanted to have new faces in the film, and that has taken some time. But we were not entirely successful in our recruiting”, Sisay Tefera the producer of the film and General Manager of Yared Film told SSI.

Sisay has never taken part in film production before. But the experience he has had touring around the countryside screening local films on a projector has given him exposure on the demand for Ethiopian films.
The producer of the film declined to comment on the cost of the film, but he has commented that as the payment for filmmakers has increased tremendously over the years it has cost him a lot of money. Filmed in Addis Ababa, Langano and Nazereth towns the film has had a critic viewing before its public screening.

“I don’t know why, but we have been getting mainly positive comments. And it would have been nicer if we could get constructive comments on what we should correct”, he explains.
The unsynchronized loud sound was something that has been criticized in the film. The final conclusion of the film is also somewhat vague and on those two points the makers have received criticisms. But the producer stated that the sound system at the National Theatre was the reason for the sudden loud sounds.
The picture quality has made this film earn applause. And the Gudifecha’s cameraman Omar Mohammed has taken the credit for the shooting of this film.
