Romantic suspense “And Edil” hits screens

By Alemayehu Seife Selassie

Addis ABABA, Ethiopia - A romantic suspense film by Spark Film Production and Black Angel Films Production, “And Edil” (“One Chance”), was released last week Saturday. The film has regular screenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Alem and Empire cinemas.
Consuming a 190,000 birr in production, “And Edil” is a low budget film, yet it contains travel and action scenes from Addis Ababa to the cities of Lalibela and Dessie in the north. Its appearance is similar to many highly-budgeted Ethiopian films.

“And Edil” is a romantic suspense that tells the story of one dedicated lover who builds a relationship with a school girl, and helps her through the hardship her family was in. His dream woman, however, gets tricked into bed by a player, and shies away from her lover, eaten by guilty conscious. As she runs away from her lover, played by the script writer Solomon, he goes out searching for her in the town of Dessie.
The script writer, producer and lead actor, Solomon Alemu Feleke, stated that in order to produce a high standard film like And Edil, he and his team have tried their level best. “During the last 20 minutes of the film we get lots of ‘wows’ from cinema-goers. And in order to take that shot, I had to do some of the stunts myself,” he said.
And Edil is directed by the renowned script writer Adonis, and actors Solomon Alemu, Meron Getenet, Samson Tadesse, Wubalem Alebachew, Meron Teshome and Alasar Samuel have taken part in it.

Solomon has previously taken an acting role in the film “Mahider,” but taking the production and lead character’s role through his and his partners Adonis and Daniel’s company, Spark Films, was an entirely different experience. Despite the fact that being an experienced motorcyclist came in handy for him, he had to improve a lot in order to do the film. “There were incidents where I was driving a motorbike on a muddy slope and the bike slid out for about seven meters on the wet earth. Meron had fallen and she broke a bone,” he said.

Solomon is working on another film that Adonis will be directing. Spark Films is going to be producing the film, but Solomon stated that the next film is not going to have a very small budget. Currently untitled, it will start shooting in five months. •
