ADDISS ABABA, Ethiopia- The African Union Commission on Thursday deployed seven police trainers to Somalia as part of its mandate to train, mentor, monitor and advice the Somali Police Force (SPF) to bring it to international standards.
The trainers who serve as an advance team of 40 police officers currently in the mission area were led by AMISOM Deputy Police Commissioner Oliver Somasa. The officers are from Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and Sierra Leone.
Mr. Ping AUC Chair person stated that the effort of AU to restore Somalia’s peace is worthless unless people of Somalia are not dedicated to establish peaceful and stable governance in their country.
“Somalia has remained without a government for the past 19 years. The situation gets worse as time passes because regardless of our endeavor we failed to maintain peace and stability unilaterally without the real commitment of the people”
He further explained that AU had called the United Nations to intervene in Somalia once again it has pleaded with the UN to not abandon Somalia’s case for it is a threat for the peace of the region and Africa at large.
“Although it takes time to make concrete steps happen, we have succeeded in getting the attention of the UN despite their other commitments globally”, Mr. Ping said.
Mr. Ping promised to equip the forces with all power AU obtains and enforce the committed Somalia troops who are ready to end the long conflict in the horn Of Africa nation.
